Kitchen Renovation of ‘The Block’ Creator

We were proud to help David Barbour, and his partner Andie Summa with the challenge of redesigning their own kitchen. As co-creator of reality television series The Block, David Barbour knows a renovation project when he see's one. He has also been the Executive Producer of the award winning television series "The Block" for the past decade or more, and has supervised dozens of kitchen makeovers in his time. By now you'd say that he knows every trick in the renovator's hand book French Provincial with a Modern Twist was the brief, and whilst we were thrilled with the result, we were a little nervous when we did his own 'reveal'. Sunny Disposition

Storage in the kitchen is a necessity, but combining this practicality element with style can prove to be a challenge. However, this kitchen showcases how the two can be married in absolute harmony. A look of grandeur is achieved thanks to the dramatic bay window, gloss cabinetry and featured extras, such as the hanging lights. These stylish touches work side-by-side with essential storage solutions such as the plentiful drawers and cabinets and walk-in butler’s pantry. Every consideration has been made when designing this kitchen, with special attention paid to the afternoon sunlight — it was important to keep this in mind when placing seating and the bar fridge under the island bench. The polished timber floorboards add a real feel of warmth to the room, ensuring it is not just grand, but great for a family or a night of entertaining...

Straight Simplicity

The previous kitchen was a tiny U-shaped space that occupied half the area it does now. A wall divided the kitchen and living area, and it felt cramped, with limited functionality. The homeowners’ vision was to open up the space and create a larger, more practical kitchen that flowed seamlessly into the living space. It needed to complement the traditional style of house and work well in a long and narrow space. Plentiful seating around the island was a must not only for a functional cooking space, but casual dining too. We carefully designed the area to add a modern edge while staying true to the original style of the house. Due to the narrow shape of the room, we had to be clever in creating storage space and not cluttering the area, the new open-plan layout increasing the available space. The straight-line simplicity of this kitchen gives a contemporary look...

The Heart of the Home

The homeowner envisioned her kitchen as a relaxed entertaining area, a true heart of the home, where guests could sit and engage with her while she prepared a meal. Creating a unified space that transitioned seamlessly into the neighbouring lounge room and outdoors was another important factor we considered when designing this room. The island fulfils the homeowner’s expectations and more. The beautiful Caesarstone White Attica benchtop with wet areas integrated into the bench offers plentiful space for friends to sit comfortably. The two-toned black and white theme with gorgeous marble accents introduces an air of sophistication to the kitchen. We flipped some of the main services to enable more efficient workflow for everyday living. The Shaker-style doors frame the ornate rangehood, which is certainly a wow factor in this chic space. The appliance cabinet’s integrated pocket doors makes manoeuvring easy in the kitchen, smoothly folding back and hiding the tea-...
